Book Club - Elmer Gantry

Culture Club
Date: Monday, 14 May 2018 19:00

Venue: The B-Bar, Barbican Theatre

For May’s book club we’ll be discussing Sinclair Lewis’ satirical novel “Elmer Gantry”.  Written in 1926, it pokes fun at the religious activities of American fundamentalists and evangelists, and the attitudes of the 1920s public toward them. The novel's protagonist, the Reverend Dr. Elmer Gantry, is initially attracted by booze, easy money and chasing women. But after various forays into evangelism, he becomes a successful Methodist minister despite his hypocrisy and serial sexual indiscretions.  Sounds like just our sort of book!

If you’ve not been to one of our book clubs before, we’ll have at least one copy of the book on our table to help you find us.
